Defending champions New Zealand suffered defeat in their opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup as West Indies registered a thrilling last-over win in Southampton.
Chasing 163, West Indies achieved the target with one ball to spare as Shamayne Campbell remained unbeaten on 90.
Sophie Devine was tasked with defending six in the final over and Campbell gave strike to 20-year-old Jahzara Claxton with one run required, the pair using a bye on the final ball to ensure victory.
Campbell looked quite emotional at the finish as it was her first T20 half-century in 122 matches for the Windies.
New Zealand regretted missing a number of catches, including that of star all-rounder Hayley Matthews, who was out for nine before she was dismissed for 48 in the chase.
The White Ferns’ score of 162–6 looked a competitive total at the half stage as they recovered from a small collapse from 49–0 to 56–3.
After Izzy made 39 at the top of the order, Brooke Halliday and Maddy Green scored 40 and 35, while Aliya Alleyne took 4-27 for the West Indies.
This could prove to be an important win for West Indies in a group where England are favorites to top the group but the battle for second place is very open.
