Days after her son Joaquin’s Broadway debut, Kelly Ripa joked that when their youngest child first told them he wanted to go to drama school, she and Mark Consuelos felt like they “failed as parents.”
“It was unimaginable for us to get any jobs,” Ripa said on the April 13 episode of “Live with Kelly & Mark.”
“I mean, we were just like, ‘You’ve got to get a job,'” recalled Joaquin, who will graduate from the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theater & Dance in May 2025. “And then he books a Broadway show and it was absolutely remarkable for us to see.”
Consuelos, 55, agreed that it was “pretty weird” to see Joaquin in action on opening night on April 9. A revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman” by Joe Mantello.
Joaquin, 23, booked a role on the show alongside showbiz veterans Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf. He plays the younger version of Christopher Abbott’s character, Biff.
During Monday’s “Live,” Ripa, 55, commented that Consuelos “has been in this game for a long time” and is finally making her Broadway debut — hinting that Joaquin beat her father to the punch.
Consuelos, whose show “Fallen Angels” opens April 19, hit out, saying it’s not “a bummer” on him that it took him more than 30 years to get his big moment on the Great White Way.
Ripa also joked that Joaquin had set some “strict standards” for her parents to follow at the post-show party, which turned into a rule: “Just be cool.”
“We were great! I thought we were great,” Ripa responded, noting that she left Joaquin “mostly alone” for the night.
“I mean, I hugged her, and I said, ‘I’m so proud of you. Congratulations,'” she admitted. “He was like, ‘Okay. Okay.’ Meanwhile, everyone else was allowed to hug her and tell her how proud they were the whole night, and that was okay.
Ripa Celebrating the opening night of Joaquin on Broadway With a social media post over the weekend, the show was described as “amazing”.
The post received love from the couple’s friends, including David Muir, Jennifer Garner, and Andy Cohen, to name a few.
Ripa and Consuelos, who met on the set of “All My Children” in 1995 and tied the knot the next year, are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary this year.
Apart from Joaquin, the couple also has 28-year-old son Michael and 24-year-old daughter Lola.
