there is a case to be made “Elizabeth Taylor,” Taylor Swift’s second track life of a showgirlis the album’s best song: upbeat and catchy, with a keen sense of wit and self-awareness that the rest of the pop star’s 12th album is unfortunately lacking. Swift sings, “I’ll cry my eyes out violet, Elizabeth Taylor,” punctuating the song’s violence as she contemplates lost lovers. All of this means that the concept of an “Elizabeth Taylor” music video should be pretty thrilling, especially since Swift said she wanted to use her time away from touring to make more music videos. Personally speaking, I would have loved to see Swift in full Elizabeth Taylor getup: dark wig, heavy eye makeup, maybe even cleopatra Dress. Swift had a different approach.
On March 31, Swift released the video for “Elizabeth Taylor” on Apple Music and Spotify, and it lacks the drama and narrative of her previous two videos. Showy girl. Instead, it is functionally a fan chamber of the actress, featuring scenes from her films and interviews and media appearances set to song. Well, that’s cool, maybe Swift understands that her imitation won’t hold a candle to the iconic actress, but the “Elizabeth Taylor” video mostly shows us that Swift is probably using her time away from tour and wedding prep to teach herself Final Cut Pro. Taylor Nation announced the singer’s more active social-media presence on March 31. The purpose of this video is to bid farewell to Women’s History Month.. Okay, okay, we should all plan to see Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Tonight it’s too late, and maybe we can feministically hope that Swift will wear a wig and a dress for the next video.
