NASA astronauts are preparing for the first lunar fly-around mission in more than half a century. NASA’s Dustin Gohmert is responsible for engineering the spacesuit in the Johnson Space Center’s Orion Crew Survival Systems Lab.
Taking years to build, the suit is designed to protect astronauts during launch and landing as well as potential emergency scenarios. Although the suits are not much different from previous generations, the pressure the astronauts will experience and the length of time they can remain in the suit is “unprecedented from anything we have attempted before,” Gohmert said.
In addition to NASA’s Artemis missions, the orange Orion suits are ultimately designed for use in future Mars transit missions.
