Although the PlayStation 5 was released a few years ago in November 2020, Sony has recently announced upcoming price increases to the company’s flagship gaming console line, which includes the PS5 with Disc Drive, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal. Starting April 2, the price of each product will increase by at least $100 due to global economic pressures, so if you’re on the fence about upgrading to the current PS5 generation, there’s no better time to buy a gaming console before it gets even more expensive.

As with most video game console generations, prices usually decrease over time, but due to issues with global markets and an unprecedented increase in RAM memory prices due to US tariffs, Sony has decided to raise prices for its gaming products. Sony is not alone in increasing the price of consoles, Nintendo already increased the price of the original Nintendo Switch last year, with fans speculating that the same would happen with the Switch 2. Microsoft also increased the prices of Xbox consoles, controllers and headsets in May last year.
As of April 2, the base line PS5 will increase by $100 from its current retail rate from $550 to $650, the Digital Edition will go from $499 to $599 (an increase of $100) and the PlayStation 5 Pro will see an even bigger increase from $750 to $900 (an increase of $150). The PlayStation Portal Remote Player will also see a $50 increase from $200 to $250.
“With continued pressure in the global economic landscape, we have decided to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal Remote Player globally,” Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, said in a PlayStation Blog post published Friday. “We know that pricing changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue to provide innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players around the world.”
