Kayla Harrison sees light at the end of the tunnel. Two months after neck surgery disrupted her big fight with Amanda Nunes, Harrison has a ways to go to resume training.
Harrison was preparing to defend the UFC women’s bantamweight title against Nunes at UFC 324, the promotion’s debut on Paramount+. Unfortunately, Harrison was closed the card forcefully Two weeks out with a herniated disc in his neck. Now, out of surgery and on the mend, Harrison is working towards a comeback.
“I look like a real killer now,” Harrison told Jorge Masvidal and Chris Duncan, who headline this Saturday’s UFC Fight Night. “Death Row MMA” podcast. “I feel like someone tried to catch me, but they failed.”
The Olympic judoka will resume training in the next few weeks pending the results of the CT scan. The only obstacle standing between Harrison and sparring is a healthy reading.
“I think I’ll have a CT scan like next week, and if everything goes good, I’ll be allowed to start drilling,” Harrison said. “I think after a few weeks of that, I’ll be back in maneuvers.”
Harrison and Nunes are expected to rebook their planned title match for earlier this year. Nunes, considered the greatest female fighter in mixed martial arts, had planned to return from a nearly three-year-long retirement to challenge Harrison.
“Aunty come quickly,” Harrison said.
