Australian teenager Gout has run 200 meters faster than great sprinter Usain Bolt of the same age.
The 18-year-old clocked a brilliant timing of 19.67 seconds to clinch victory in her national championship on Sunday.
It was the first time that Gout had legally gone under the 20-second mark since a wind-assisted 19.84 last season, and it is the world leading time this year.
When he emerged in 2024, at the age of 16, he achieved the fastest time ever, setting a national record of 20.06. Sunday’s performance in Sydney was faster than Jamaica’s eight-time Olympic champion’s time of 19.93 in 2004.
Aidan Murphy, who was second behind Gout, also beat the 20-second mark with a time of 19.88.
“This is what I was waiting for,” said Gout, who was born in Queensland to South Sudanese parents.
“We have such incredible athletes in Australia and me being able to race these athletes, we push each other to the limit. Two Australian under-20s. I mean, it’s amazing.
“Knowing that I ran it legally is a huge weight off my shoulders, and I have the speed and my body to run that time. So, it definitely feels great, and I’m ready for more.”
Gout has indicated he will skip the Commonwealth Games, starting in Glasgow on July 23, to focus on the World Under-20 Championships in Oregon in early August.
