Four astronauts on NASA’s Artemis II mission traveled farther from Earth than any other in human history in a dramatic lunar flyby that captured spectacular images of the planet from rarely seen angles.
As expected, the Orion spacecraft crew lost contact with mission control for 40 minutes while orbiting behind the moon. When communications were reestablished, astronaut Christina Koch said: “It’s great to hear from Earth again.”
Before starting the journey back home, the team also witnessed a total eclipse of the Sun as the Moon blocked the Sun’s light.
After the flight, President Trump spoke to the team and congratulated them: “Today, you have made history and made all of America truly proud, incredibly proud.”
