More than 350,000 vitamins and supplements were recalled due to improper packaging, which federal regulators said could put children at “risk of serious injury or death.”
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, New Jersey-based Vitaquest International initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 356,140 dietary supplements that contain iron due to the lack of child-resistant packaging required under the Poison Prevention Packaging Act.
“Dietary supplements containing iron must be in child-resistant packaging in accordance with the Poison Prevention Packaging Act,” the commission said in its announcement.

“The packaging of the supplements is not child-resistant, as the contents may pose a risk of serious injury or death if ingested by young children,” the alert said.
Vitaquest International stated that the purpose of child-resistant packaging on these products is “to ensure that young children do not accidentally ingest amounts of the product that could cause iron toxicity.”
The company also stressed that the only concern is the lack of a child-resistant cap or storage pouch and there is no issue with product manufacturing, material quality or anything else.

“While the formulation and iron content of the product are safe when used as directed, we are issuing this recall to protect young children from the risk that they will gain access to the products and consume more than directed,” the company said on its website.
The recall also includes prenatal vitamins as well as supplements for bariatric surgery patients who have had sleeve or band procedures. It also includes ZenBean Kids Café Instant Coffee + Nutrition Latte, a caffeine-free coffee alternative for kids, sold in Original, Caramel, Chocolate and Vanilla flavors.
The affected products were sold under the Hey, Bari Life, Bird & Bee, Biote, Dr. Fuhrman, NuLife, HMR, Bariatric Pal, Noevir, ZenBin and Sakara brands.

No injuries have been reported so far in connection with the recalled packaging.
